Why Use Accessories & Soft Furnishings In Your Home?
Home accessories can include anything from clocks, cushions, curtains, ornaments, candlesticks, portable lighting and table linens. The list goes on and on. William Morris once said, “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful”. We think that is a wonderful way to decide how we furnish our home.
We are so lucky in this country that deciding whether or not we buy an ornament or new cushion for our living room isn’t deemed to be a luxury; it is just what we do. We are surrounded by home décor and home furnishing stores both on- and offline that tempt us with an array of elegant, twinkling and tacky ornaments to fill us up until our purses are empty! So we need to go back to Mr Morris and think carefully about what accessories we buy and why we want them.
Home accessories are a great way to complete your freshly decorated room, or to update an old colour scheme that you cannot afford to redecorate. Adding a simple accent cushion to your favourite reading chair and buying a matching set of curtains will instantly change the look and feel of your room. In fact, it is much cheaper to keep your walls a more neutral colour and change your home accessories regularly, than it is to completely repaint or re-wallpaper your room.
With such a wide range of products available, it is easy to find a few great items that will help create a unique theme for your room. For us, a theme could just be a colour preference (e.g. we have a room called ‘The White Room’) or a theme could refer to a specific ethnic region that you have based your room upon (e.g. nautical, Mexican etc).
You will find that home decorations, ornaments and soft furnishings are also seasonal and may vary according to the latest trends. You will find that: vases change shape, cushions evolve from heavily decorated to plain, one minute curtains have tab tops and the next traditional headers, sometimes curtain tie-backs are fashionable and sometimes not, and sometimes delicately cut glass and lead crystal ornaments are a fashion no-no. It is hard to keep up!
We think the best thing to do is to buy timeless accessories that you think are beautiful and that look great in your home and then rotate these into different parts of the house according to the season. This makes it okay to spend a little more and ‘invest’ in a piece that will hopefully serve you for many years to come.
